Street Cleansing Services
Street Cleansing Services in Portsmouth
With a dedicated team of 85 professionals, Colas delivers comprehensive street cleansing services across Portsmouth, operating seven days a week, 365 days a year. Our teams work tirelessly to maintain clean, safe, and welcoming streets for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Public Litter Bins
Our Street Cleansing Team empties public litter bins across the city every day of the year. Bins in highfootfall areas—such as the city centre—are checked multiple times daily and emptied whenever they reach more than half capacity. All bins are dualpurpose and suitable for both general litter and dog waste.
Dog Waste Bins
Portsmouth has over 800 dog waste bins, all serviced by our dedicated threeperson team. Working across a sevenday schedule, the team empties and cleans these bins three times a week. In total, Colas collects more than six tonnes of dog waste each week.
Graffiti Removal
Our specialist Graffiti Removal Team—known as the ‘Grimebusters’—consists of two trained operatives who use highpressure hotwater equipment to safely remove graffiti from lamp columns, subways, and other affected areas. Any offensive graffiti is removed promptly following report.
Block Sweeping
Colas operates a fleet of road sweepers that carry out block sweeping in residential areas every other week, scheduled within 24 hours of household waste collection. Working Tuesday through Saturday, each sweeping team follows a dedicated route to ensure consistent service.
Alleyway Sweeping
All adopted alleyways across Portsmouth are swept fortnightly by our operatives, who also remove any flytipped waste encountered during their rounds.
Litter Picking
Our litterpicking teams work 12 hours a day, seven days a week, to keep Portsmouth’s streets clear of litter. During the summer months, additional operatives and more frequent rounds are deployed across the beach and seafront to support increased footfall and extended daylight hours.
Leaf Fall Programme
Leaf fall season typically begins in midOctober and lasts 8–10 weeks, depending on weather conditions. A dedicated team works Monday to Friday following a planned schedule informed by years of experience, targeting roads with early and late leaf fall. The programme remains flexible, allowing us to respond swiftly to reported issues.
Fly-Tip Removal
Our flytip removal service—known locally as The Hit Team—consists of two operatives supported by a 7.5tonne vehicle. The team remains on standby to respond to reports of flytipping and typically clears incidents within 24 hours Monday to Friday.
