Drainage Services
Drainage Services
Our Drainage Team delivers a comprehensive programme of proactive and reactive works to ensure Portsmouth’s drainage network operates efficiently and reliably, helping to reduce flood risk and protect the city’s highways.
Proactive Gully Cleansing
Our structured gully cleansing programme plays a critical role in minimising the risk of surface water flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. Every drain and gully across the city is cleansed as part of a planned threeyear cyclical programme, ensuring consistent coverage and longterm network resilience.
Reactive Drainage Response
We respond promptly to reports from members of the public regarding blocked, slowrunning, or odorous gullies. In addition, the drainage network is routinely inspected by Colas inspectors on monthly and sixmonthly cycles, depending on road classification. Any identified defects are prioritised and resolved to maintain effective network performance.
Flooding Hotspot Management
During significant rainfall events, gully tankers are deployed to known historical flooding hotspots to remove surface water as required. This targeted response helps to reduce disruption, improve road safety, and protect surrounding communities.
CCTV Drainage Surveys
ll gullies on primary and secondary roads are surveyed using CCTV technology. Survey footage is submitted for independent thirdparty verification, ensuring transparency and accuracy. Any maintenance or repair recommendations arising from these surveys are implemented in line with best practice.
Drainage Repairs
Defects identified through inspections and CCTV surveys are addressed efficiently. Repairs are undertaken using appropriate methods, including trenchless relining or excavation and full repair, depending on the nature and severity of the issue.
