Volunteering in the Community in Collaboration with Buko
28 02 2026
With the success of the collaborative working with Buko and Solent Academies Trust back in December 2025. A new project is being planned for line marking at a school playground in Portsmouth for the summer term.
Colas and Buko met with Solent Academies Trust to visit the playground and discuss what was needed at Cliffdale Primary Academy.
Cliffdale Primary Academy is a designated special school in Portsmouth for children aged 4–11 with complex learning difficulties. Painting road markings on their playground will help them learn essential road safety skills, such as crossing the road and understanding traffic signs and signals.
The children who all love using their scooters and bicycles on the playground will have clearly painted defined roads, tracks and crossings and will all learn about Traffic Awareness. Working closely with Buko, who are providing the school with Traffic cones and road signs it will really set the scene and allow children to practice the "Stop, Look, Listen, and Cross" rules without the dangers of real traffic.

As part of Road Safety week 2025 last year Colas Portsmouth worked with Buko and Solent Academies Trust at their SEN school, The Mary Rose Academy….. tbc -The Lantern Provision in Portsmouth. Colas designed the school playground area at the Lantern School with some Educational line painting to help teach the children about the road safety. It transformed the playing area into an interactive learning environment with markings for road safety along with donated traffic signs and traffic cones from Buko.
The idea was to give the children not only a space they can enjoy playing with, but also to learn about traffic awareness and road safety. The realistic road layout allows the children to learn about pedestrian and cyclist safety and the rules of crossing the road in a controlled environment. Everyone was delighted with how the project turned out and which is why Colas were approached again to create something similar at Cliffdale Primary Academy.
